The Chinese Historical Society of Southern California (CHSSC) was organized in November 1975. The mission for the Society is to bring together people with a mutual interest in the important history and historical role of Chinese and Chinese Americans in southern California. To pursue, preserve and communicate knowledge of this history, and to promote the heritage of the Chinese and Chinese American community in support of a better appreciation of the rich, multicultural society of the United States.

As our Social Media Specialist, you will play a key role in sharing and preserving the history of our community through engaging digital storytelling. You will develop, implement, and manage our social media presence to increase awareness, grow our audience, and deepen community engagement.

Working with a nonprofit historical society (chssc.org), you will create compelling content that highlights local history, events, and collections while contributing to a meaningful mission. This position offers the opportunity to combine creativity, research, and storytelling to bring history to life for a modern audience.

Roles & responsibilities

• Develop and execute social media strategies aligned with the organization’s mission and outreach goals

• Create, curate, and manage engaging content (photos, videos, and written posts) for platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and other relevant channels

• Capture content on-site at events, programs, and historical locations as needed

• Monitor, analyze, and report on performance metrics (engagement, growth, reach) to improve campaigns

• Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and partners to ensure consistent messaging and branding

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of social media platforms and tools

• Proven ability to create visually appealing and engaging content

• Interest in history, preservation, and community storytelling

• Ability to work independently and in a team environment

• Experience with social media for a nonprofit or business is preferred, but enthusiasm and willingness to learn are highly valued

• Knowledge of Los Angeles’ Chinese American experience is preferred

• $29/hour for 155 hours ($4500)

• Hours flexible – some in Chinatown and elsewhere - to be coordinated with manager
